After the shooting, Snyder went back to his house where he barricaded himself inside during an hours-long standoff with police.

A man has shot dead three of his neighbors and killed himself after his wife allegedly fled their home where he had been holding her captive for days.

Christopher Snyder, 41, shot and killed the three adults inside a neighbor's house in Brookeville, Maryland, about 25 miles north of the USA capital, on Monday afternoon, police said.

Over four hours after police initially responded to the incident, the area remained an "active scene", the county police department said on its official Twitter page.

When his wife escaped from his home, Snyder entered a neighbor's home at 22002 Brown Farm Way, where he killed Mary Ann Olson, 66, who lived there; Danny Lee Murphy, 70, of South Dakota, who was visiting Olson; and Craig Harold Shotwell, 54, of Owings Mills, who was working on Olson's home.

Three other adults in the home where the three people were killed were able to escape unharmed.

Police reportedly found "a number" of guns in the home, Manger said at the press conference.

Police are still searching the house for weapons and explosives based on the fact that Snider said during a conversation with negotiators.

Officers breached the front door at 11 p.m., with Snyder still on the phone with negotiators, prompting Snyder to hang up. "At that point, officers outside the home heard a single gun shot".

Manger said Snyder held his wife hostage over the weekend.

The suspect was reportedly known to police.
