Put the phone down: Google cares for our "digital well-being"

It's definitely not the Play Store you're probably used to, though: Google told us there are "thousands of apps" that have been pre-approved for use on in-car Android systems, though most of the ones I got to try were streaming services like Spotify and Deezer.

"Will children be able to use these agents and receive calls from them?" At its I/O developer conference, the company showed off what the next version of Android Auto will look like and how developers can start preparing their applications for it. "As digital technologies become better at doing human things, the focus has to be on how to protect humans, how to delineate humans and machines, and how to create reliable signals of each-see 2016". Apple also imposes tight restrictions on which core OS features third-party apps can access.

Google says Duplex can only carry out natural conversations after being deeply trained within a specific subject, and that it can't carry out general conversations.

They include an "app timer", a "wind down" feature, and a dashboard that'll tell you how much time you've been spending on your smartphone and in which apps. Sometimes they would like to break away from their devices to be able to spend time "on better things". The new Android features don't much help for distracted walkers (now a menace in many cities), for example. When the device is placed face down, a new feature will put the device on hold and silence it so the user can center on other things.

"When people call us, we ask them where they want to sit, inside, outside or upstairs", says Goplen. At that time, the device will again go silent and the front of the device will dim to help users disconnect before bed.

A new redesign sees Google news with a personalized UI that sorts out content through artificial intelligence. Whenever it recognizes a photo of one of your Google contacts, it can suggest sharing that photo with that person.

Problems with degrading batteries are a constant complaint of smartphone users and environmentalists alike, who say smartphone makers are intentionally shortening the lives of devices to increase yearly sales. After all, the very fact of fake news, information overload, and the dilution of trust in media has been in part enabled by Google itself - by its search algorithm, its autocomplete controversies, conspiracy theories on YouTube, and more.

But many publishers are apprehensive that the new shift in Google News may affect their ranking initially, forcing many players out of the front page. To view the top stories at a given time, users can head over to the new "For You" tab that brings up stories from several global and local headlines, including the sources a user subscribed to.

"Our AI constantly reads the firehose of the web for you, for millions of articles, videos, podcasts and comments being published every minute". Then, it can effectively "turn off" apps that are using battery in the background when it thinks you're less likely to use that app in the near future. "Adaptive Brightness" will allow Android P phones to learn how you set your brightness settings and replicate it in different settings depending on the light. You could call this on-device machine learning.

That Google soaks up all that information may strike some as creepy. Hai Do was the editor.
