California building explosion is being investigated as intentional

The blast that killed one person and injured three at an Aliso Viejo building was likely an intentional act, possibly from a package, a federal official told The Associated Press. The U.S. Postal Service was also brought in to the investigation. Police investigators and FBI agents are studying the causes of the explosion, and they assure that there is no lingering threat to the community. The official was briefed on the investigation but wasn't authorized to discuss the matter publicly and spoke to the AP on condition of anonymity.

The explosion happened around 1pm Tuesday in Aliso Viejo, about 50 miles (80.5 kilometres) south of Los Angeles.

The siding on the two-story building's walls and the entire bottom floor were blown out, and windows had been shattered.

Krajnyak lived in the Orange County community of Coto de Caza.

"We have not found any type of specific device inside of the building right now that could tell us or lead us to what exactly the device was, if it was a device", Commander Dave Sawyer of the Orange County Sheriff's Department said at a press conference.

The investigation is still in its early stage and authorities had begun processing the inside of the building, he said.

The identity of the female victim who was killed, has yet to be released.

Investigators are searching for clues about an explosion at a Southern California medical office that left a woman dead and three other people injured. Investigators were interviewing the victims Tuesday night.

Orange County Undersheriff Don Barnes says the formal identification of the body is continuing Wednesday but authorities believe it is that of Ildiko Krajnyak (IL-di-koh KRY-nyak), a licensed cosmetologist.

Officials say other potential causes such as a gas leak have been ruled out.

At this point, officials are not ruling anything out.

Fennessey says the blast involved a building under renovation.

Authorities provided no additional information about the search.

Federal Bureau of Investigation spokesman Mike Gifford had said earlier there was no initial indication of terrorism in the facility about 7 miles northeast of Laguna Beach.

Orange County Sheriff's Department spokeswoman Carrie Braun says investigators worked through the night and were still at the scene Wednesday morning.

Firefighters responded to a call of an explosion shortly after 1 p.m. local time.

Dong Shin, a witness, said he heard a loud boom minutes before his appointment in a nearby building.

He said it felt "almost like an quake, but a big natural disaster".

McWilliams said she saw two burned women staggering out of the building, covered in ash and soot.

"At first I was scared only because the people running around had a lot of fear in their faces", he said.

Nothing indicates there were any threats made before the blast, which appeared to be concentrated in a suite on the first floor of the building, Sawyer said. A neighbor who lives across the street from the Drover Court residence captured home surveillance footage of a man described by the neighbor as Krajnyak-Vestil's husband arriving home around 1 a.m. Wednesday.
