But Bolton declined to comment on a Washington Post report that North Korea is trying to obscure and hide its nuclear program even after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un agreed at last month's Singapore summit with U.S. President Donald Trump to "work toward denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula".

"The officials' assessments stand in stark contrast to that of US President Donald Trump, who declared following the June 12 summit with Kim that there is no longer a nuclear threat" from North Korea.

"If they have the strategic decision already made to do that, and they're cooperative, we can move very quickly", he added. "I'm sure that Secretary of State Mike Pompeo will be discussing this with the North Koreans in the near future about really how to dismantle all of their WMD and ballistic missile programs in a year", Bolton said.

The North Korean leader seems to consider the lifting of the sanctions as a pillar of "gradual concessions" by the United States, the sources said. According to some reports, Pompeo may make another visit to North Korea this week for more talks.

US intelligence agencies believe North Korea has secretly upped fuel production for its nuclear weapons arsenal, according to NBC.

Samantha Vinograd, President Barack Obama's former Director for Iraq on the National Security Council warned that North Korea is deceiving President Donald Trump and he doesn't seem too anxious about it.

He said the administration was well aware of North Korea's track record over the decades in dragging out negotiations with the U.S.to continue weapons development.

Officials say North Korea plans to keep the U.S. in the dark about how many warheads it has, how much fissile material is in its possession and where all of its nuclear facilities are located.

MP Mark Pritchard, a member of All-Party Parliamentary Group on North Korea, said: 'The Americans will not be taken for fools.

Kim is the United States ambassador to the Philippines and has been one of the key U.S. officials dealing with the North Koreans leading up to the Trump-Kim summit.

Siegfried Hecker, a nuclear scientist and Stanford University professor, has predicted it would take around 10 years to dismantle and clean up a substantial part of North Korea's Yongbyon nuclear site.

Trump reiterated in an interview broadcast today that he thinks Kim is serious about denuclearization. Trump feuded with G7 leaders during a summit in Canada last month over trade, abruptly dropping support for a routine joint statement.
