Heat index expected to be near 100 Sunday, NWS cautions

The Massachusetts Emergency Management Agency's social media account says temperatures will be dangerously hot this weekend and advises people to stay hydrated and check on children, the elderly and pets for heat-related illness. This is the warmest heat wave of the year, placing over 80 million under heat advisories this Saturday.

But until then most of ME, with the exception of coastal areas, should expect to endure extremely hot weather.

It will be even hotter on Monday with the heat index surpassing 105° in some areas.

"Oppressive heat and humidity combined with ample sunshine, make for risky conditions", according to the National Weather Service's website, and people are advised to stay cool indoors and avoid strenuous activity outdoors amid the heat wave. If the Northeast does not dip below 90 degrees through Friday, some locations, including New York City;, Albany, New York; Philadelphia; and Washington, D.C., could enter record territory for length of a heat wave. Sunshine will also be abundant with breezy winds out of the southwest at 5 to 15 miles per hour.

Heatwaves occur when there are three consecutive days with highs of 90 degrees or higher. Skies will be mostly clear, however some patchy fog will develop as well.

Meanwhile, Australian Ben Simmons - of the Philadelphia 76ers - has won Rookie of the Year honours at the NBA Awards . Dwane Casey was crowned Coach of the Year after guiding the Toronto Raptors to first place in the Eastern Conference.

The early summer heat was also producing other negative side effects, such as a tornado warning issued late Saturday night for northern New Hampshire and a section of Oxford County near Mexico, Bethel and West Paris. Winds will be breezy again out of the south southwest at 10 to 15 miles per hour, gusting to 20 miles per hour. As of Sunday night, the forecast high for Friday is 88.

Tuesday - A chance of showers and thunderstorms. Chance of precipitation is 30 percent.

MONDAY | Partly cloudy with a few t'storms possible. Mostly sunny and hot, with a high near 93. Chance of precipitation is 40 percent. Partly cloudy, with a low around 73.

The high Friday is now forecast to be 88 degrees.
