Brazil beats Mexico, advances to World Cup quarterfinals

So far, they have lived up to the "favourites" tag.

"Great player but can't stand him", they said.

With only two goals, Neymar is lagging well behind England star Harry Kane's tournament-leading tally of five goals.

There were no shortage of sombreros in the crowd as Mexican fans decked out the stadium with oversize straw hats and wrestling masks, while Brazilian fans were equally zealous in their fashion choices, featuring headbands in blue, yellow and green with many fans also displaying their country's flag in face paint. There is nothing spectacular about this side but they are efficient, know how to go up in gears and defend brilliantly as a unit with three clean sheets from four matches. Going past the Brazilian full-back was never a problem for Vela. The same tactic worked wonders for the team when they defeated Germany in the group stage.

The centre-forward role in this Brazil side is probably as much about defining the overall shape and mentality as it is about finding the back of the net. They started playing their game, dominating the possession and creating chances.

He wouldn't be called on to make another as Brazil posted its third consecutive shutout, running its scoreless streak to 310 minutes. Neymar picked up the ball wide and then ran straight nearly parallel to the goal, drawing away Mexico's defenders with him.

The Brazil talisman drew several defenders as he ran across the edge of the area with the ball at his feet, before passing to Willian and continuing his run into the box.

Now, for all the talent of Neymar, he has an exceptional game sense.

In between, however, fans also saw the Neymar everyone loves to hate.

Joel Embiid has made it no secret that he'd love LeBron James to link up with himself and Ben Simmons in Philly next season. James was on a plane that flew into Van Nuys Airport near Los Angeles on Saturday.

Spain, Argentina and Portugal have all followed reigning champions Germany through the trap door, with Mexico the first to wound the Germans with a mesmerizing 1-0 win in the group stages.

The heroics from Brazil came in large part from Neymar, who had both a goal and an assist in the match.

Mexican Miguel Layun came to take the ball and sneakily put his toe on Neymar's ankle. The theatrics he brings onto the field might actually give a complex to a professional stage actor.

Neymar has scored six goals from 38 shots in World Cup finals. This could've been another of them if it hadn't been for Ochoa who, just like four years ago, kept denying nearly every Brazilian on the pitch.

MEXICO had hope, some genuine hope, more than just cautious optimism that they could get a long-awaited first victory over Brazil at a World Cup, that they could for the first time since 1986 they would advance to the "quinto partido" or the fifth match at world football's showpiece tournament.

However, he has faced accusations of diving at this year's World Cup.

The quality of Brazil's attack was much-hyped before the tournament, and rightly so. "It's very hard to come back the way he's done". Their positioning skills when their opponents attacked ensured there was no trouble in clearing the danger.

"He's very agile. He's very fast", Brazil coach Tite said.

Brazil's Roberto Firmino is mobbed by teammates after scoring their second goal in the 89th minute against Mexico.

"We wasted a lot of time because of one single player. we lost our style in the second half, because of the referee".
