Mueller Team Noncommittal On Whether Rick Gates Will Testify In Manafort Trial

Those questions will be answered by 12 jurors selected this week as Manafort's trial on tax evasion and bank fraud charges gets underway at the courthouse in Alexandria, Virginia.

Trump, in the midst of an angry tweet storm Wednesday about special counsel Robert Mueller's Russian Federation investigation, asked the public "who was treated worse", 1920s gangster Al Capone or Manafort. That was an apparent reference to one of the expensive purchases Mr. Manafort allegedly made which prosecutors said they planned to describe at trial.

Prosecutors are expected to say that his life of luxury did not match what he had declared on his tax returns.

Manafort, 69, has pleaded not guilty to tax and bank fraud charges.

It's expected to be rich with tales of lavish spending, secret shell companies and millions of dollars of Ukrainian money flowing through offshore bank accounts and into Manafort's pocket.

Before joining Mr Trump's team in summer 2016, Paul Manafort had worked on a number of Republican presidential campaigns, including those of Gerald Ford in the mid-1970s and Ronald Reagan from 1978 to 1980.

Testimony is likely to begin Tuesday afternoon. During a preliminary hearing in May, Ellis said he saw no relation between the cases and "anything the special counsel is authorized to investigate", but concluded later that upon further review the special counsel had "followed the money paid by pro-Russian officials" to Manafort.

Manafort faces 18 counts. Trump repeatedly has sought to discredit the investigation, which is also looking into any possible unlawful Trump campaign coordination with Moscow.

The trial heads into its second day Wednesday, a day after the jury was seated, both sides presented their opening statements and the government's first witness took the stand. Five witnesses were granted immunity.

Ten were still burning late on Tuesday morning, including blazes in Corinth, Crete, and in central and northern Greece. Some people tried to escape on highways only to be surrounded by walls of fire. "It's just that we can't find her.

They said he did not wilfully mislead or deceive the Internal Revenue Service, and that he was betrayed by Gates, who pleaded guilty to making false statements after being indicted by Mueller.

"I don't anticipate that a government witness will utter the word 'Russia,"' Andres said.

Manafort's trial is the first arising from Mueller's investigation into potential ties between Donald Trump's presidential campaign and Russian Federation.

Russian Federation has denied interfering in the election and Trump denies any involvement by his campaign. "Didn't know Manafort was the head of the Mob". Manafort's arguments have not ended well for him of late in Virginia, and it was Jackson who ordered that Manafort's pre-trial release conditions to be revoked.

"It is hereby stipulated and agreed by and between the parties that the (case) be voluntarily dismissed", the new filing said.

On Tuesday morning, Judge Ellis rejected Mr. Manafort's request to bar prosecutors' use of about 50 documents from Mr. Manafort's years of consulting work in Ukraine.

Legal experts said Manafort may be hoping to be found not guilty - or holding out hopes of a presidential pardon. But Butina also appeared to have had a broader mission, The Daily Beast reports, detailing an encounter in which Butina urged legendary US financial executive Maurice "Hank" Greenberg to pour more money into the secretly insolvent Russian bank Investtorgbank, leaving observers "shocked and disturbed" at her audacity.

This is the first of two trials for Manafort.
