18 die in tragic Russian helicopter crash shortly after takeoff

A Mil Mi-8 helicopter has crashed in the Krasnoyarsk Territory, 18 people have been killed, the press service for the Utair airline said.

According to preliminary data, the helicopter collided with the external cargo suspension of another helicopter that took off earlier, before it fell, collapsed and burnt, a statement published by Russia's Federal Air Transport Agency said.

Killed three crew members and 15 passengers - work rotations, flying at an oil pumping station.

A commission has been set up to investigate the crash.

In 2016, 19 people died when a Mi-8 helicopter carrying oil and gas field workers crashed in a remote area of Siberia.

The Mi-8AMT helicopter RA-25640 was manufactured by the Ulan-Ude Aircraft Plant in 2010.

One helicopter was carrying passengers while the other helicopter which landed safely was carrying external suspended cargo.

According to sources within law enforcement and emergency services cited by Russian media, before the crash, the airctaft's propeller blades struck the outside cargo carried by another helicopter.

Utair said the helicopter was made in Russian Federation in 2010.

Two flight recorders have been found at the scene, TASS reported.

The crash took place shortly after take-off, with the helicopter's fuel tanks full.
