Conor McGregor to return against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 229

Conor McGregor is set to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov on October 6 at UFC 229, and that's a huge fight on it's own.

Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov confirmed that his son would be preparing for the bout in the U.S., and that Russian Federation "has the right to expect victory" from a man who is unbeaten in 26 fights in the UFC.

The "Notorious" has not fought in the UFC since November 2016, when he beat Eddie Alvarez for the lightweight title and became the first fighter to hold two titles simultaneously.

The announcement at Orpheum Theater in downtown Los Angeles - made via a pre-produced video that included footage of the Barclays Center incident - was made at a UFC seasonal news conference to reveal fight cards running through the end of the year.

McGregor and Nurmagomedov have a checkered history that culminated at the UFC 223 media day in NY when the Irishman infamously attacked a bus carrying Nurmagomedov.

McGregor was arrested, but was sentenced last month to perform five days of community service, avoiding jail time in a plea deal.

The fight comes as a relief for Dana White and his company, as they were severely lacking in star-power in McGregor's absence and watching pay-per-view numbers decline in the process.

On Tuesday, a court rejected his appeal to be released from house arrest during his trial on terrorism charges. The American pastor was also charged with supporting outlawed Kurdish PKK fighters.

"And obviously for Conor, coming back from a two-year layoff, in my opinion - and it's insane to say this because of how popular he is around the world - but he's one of the most underrated fighters in the UFC".

Nurmagomedov has been one of the pound-for-pound greats of MMA, racking up 10 consecutive victories since joining the UFC.

Regardless of the wild antics that lead up to the fight, the two should make for quite a bout. White said. "He's obviously lost lots of money".

His 26-0-0 record is as good as it gets in MMA, and he's as dominant a wrestler as the UFC has ever seen.

The UFC did not disclose the terms of the fight agreement. Two years ago, few could have fathomed a bigger fight for McGregor than a trilogy with Nate Diaz, but this matchup challenges that.

To add fuel to the fire, Diaz's scheduled opponent at UFC 230, Dustin Poirier, also hit the internet to express the similar sentiment of not taking part in the fight.
